ABSTRACT This present work intends to assemble a brief analysis of the main tendencies of current trends in general economic, political, ecological and social development in the capitalist world and particularly in Brazil, showing its numerous implications for the majority of population for social policies in general and for health policies and mental health in our country. This backdrop aims to put up in debate the theoretical bases and political strategies of the actors and social movements that propel the struggle for psychiatric reform in the country, particularly inside anti-asylum movement. It is noted that, as a whole, this movement gathers a pluralist specter of theoretical and clinical-care trends, which constitutes in a positive characteristic. However, it did not build a theoretical, systematical core, capable of an analysis of the contemporary crisis, marked by neoliberalism, and of its consequences to mental health field. This deficiency has generated numerous distortions and weaknesses in addressing current limitations for anti-asylum struggle. The author claims, then, the need to invest in theorists that built a political economy of psychiatry history and psychiatric reform processes, for a more systematical evaluation of structural limits and strategies needed to advance in the possibilities of psychiatric reform in peripheral and semi-peripheral countries, particularly in this context of neoliberal crisis.

KEYWORDS: Psychiatric Reform; Neoliberal Crisis; Theoretical Bases; Mental Health.
ER -
