This paper presents a study on the play Flávia, cabeça, tronco e membros, written by Millôr Fernandes in 1963. his play evokes possible relations with classical studies, especially the Greek Tragedy and Shakespearean drama. Some evidence is presented that the author was inluenced by the tragic genre, part of a caption is a perfect example of the tragic genre: “tragedy or comedy in two acts”. A point which connects the play and the tragic genre is the Greek word: ?????????, sparagmos which carries a meaning related to laceration and mutilation. Among the most important themes found in Flávia, cabeça, tronco e membros: characters with transgressive qualities, the demand of destruction and the unstoppable desire to commit crimes play an important part of the analysis of the play.
