La figura del sacerdote en Pedro Páramo

Abstract

It is a proven fact that religion plays a significant role in Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo. Since the religion in question is the roman catholic, it calls for the presence of the pastor; in this case padre Rentería. He is a complex character whose performance goes throughout the key passages of the novel. Yet the carrying out of his mission depends on Paramo’s whims. Eventually ovewhelmed by doubts and confronted with the problems of his parrishioners the priest joins the cristeros’ revolt.
