Abstract

This paper focuses on the identification of violence and its causes in Verga’s (1840 ) “Rosso Malpelo”. Verga, an Italian writer of the 19th century was, according to critics, the most important name in Italian Realism. This article proposes that the short story shows how society can punish those who are considered weak and live without social dignity. “Rosso Malpelo” has a puzzling beauty, but, at the same time, overwhelms the reader in the sense that it raises awareness of how society can be inexorable.
