Abstract

In this article, I bring the discussion on distance education and its contribution for the democratization of higher education in Brazil through the increase in the number of courses offered, made possible in that distance education allows for tackling the problems of geographic distances and social differences. Also, I provide a brief characterization of the programs of two universities located in the state of Santa Catarina, UDESC and UNISUL, and, seeking to know if distance education reaches its goal, I analyze the perceptions of one teacher working within both programs. Lastly, I make some remarks concerning the advantages of distance education for the teaching and learning of foreign languages.
