Influence of the Reopening of the Linguado Channel based on Hydrodynamics modeling

Abstract

Since the closure of the Linguado Channel in 1935, using an embankment, several sectors of society have discussed the reopening, because the stream interruption has been causing many social and environmental problems in the surrounding areas. The present work designs a hydrodynamic model to predict the behavior of Babitonga Bay, with a partial or a total reopening. The software HEC-RAS allowed the production of a satisfactory model, acquiring results of water level and hydrodynamics of the bay, who demonstrate that in the current embankment location and the mouth of the Linguado Channel, can observe an alteration in the hydrodynamic which will generate a high potential of modification on the channel bed, directly impacting the bank structures existing in the river channel.

João Luiz da Rocha Borin, Santa Catarina State University

Estudante de Mestrado no Programa de Pós Graduação em Engenharia Civil (Recursos Hídricos) pela Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (UDESC). Graduado em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade Estadual de Santa Catarina – UDESC (2023). Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: Hidráulica, hidrologia, hidrodinâmica costeira e modelagem hidrodinâmica computacional.

Leonardo Romero Monteiro, Santa Catarina State University

Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the State University of Santa Catarina. He holds a degree in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2011) and obtained his master's and doctoral degrees from the Graduate Program in Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. During his doctoral studies, he conducted part of his research at the University of Poitiers/France under the supervision of Professor Eric Lamballais. He has experience in the areas of Hydraulics, Fluid Mechanics, and Hydrology, with emphasis on Computational Fluid Mechanics, Free Surface Flows, and Flood Hazard Mapping.
