The ruin of the house and the decline of the family

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relation between the ruin of the house and the decline of the Meneses family, in the novel Crônica da casa assassinada, published in 1959 by Lúcio Cardoso. The tragedy of the Meneses family occurs because they do not try to realize the passage of patriarchal family to bourgeois modern family. Therefore, they can not adapt themselves to their historical time and this causes the family ends. Gilberto Freyre (2000), Antônio Candido (1951) and Mariza Corrêa (1994) principles will be used to base this analysis.
