Old women (r)exist: some notes about female old age and its presence in the Brazilian literature of the early 21st century

Abstract

Based on the study of fictional narratives of Brazilian literature published in the first decades of this new century, the aim is to investigate the presence of old women, especially those who stand out as narrators and / or as protagonists, observing whether and how contemporary literature has contributed to forge certain identities, or rather, to reinforce or to (de) construct patterns and roles commonly attributed to the aged female figure. Above all, it seeks to contribute to removing or minimizing stereotypes and silence about female old age (still) present in our canon. For that, the novels Mar azul (Rocco, 2012), by Paloma Vidal; Amor em dois tempos (Companhia das Letras, 2014), by Lívia Garcia-Roza; Quarenta dias (Alfaguara, 2014) and Outros Cantos (Alfaguara, 2016), both by Maria Valéria Rezende, are taken as corpus. To support the analyzes, we use the contributions of Simone de Beauvoir, Guita Grin Debert, Mirian Goldenberg, Ecléa Bosi and Regina Dalcastagnè, among others.

Cristiane da Silva Alves, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Cristiane da Silva Alves é Licenciada, Mestre e Doutora em Letras pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Também é graduada em Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais pela UNISINOS. Atualmente, é bolsista de Pós-Doutorado (PNPD-CAPES/MEC) junto ao Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras da UFRGS, com o projeto de pesquisa “Mulheres velhas: seus lugares e papéis na literatura brasileira do início do século XXI”.
