The Pillow-Book: Sei Shonagon’s Notes

Abstract

In Peter Greenaway’s 1995 movie The pillow-book one of the most important Japanese writers of all times is the main motif behind the scene: Sei Shonagon, a courtesan of the Heian Period, attached to the Empress Sadako. The protagonist of the movie, Nagiko, is seen as a contemporary Shonagon. Some of the architectural, cultural and literary aspects of the Heian Period are analyzed in brief. Forty notes of Sei Shonagon’s book Makura no Soshi (The pillow-book) are translated to Portuguese by the first time. Shonagon is taken by many as a feminist avant la lettre, due to her notes on the feminine condition.
