Abstract

The disequilibrium economics, worsening of environmental problems, among other contemporary problems, have been interpreted as symptoms of a modernity crisis that, jointly with the development of science, technology, and of several academia domains, led to the questioning of presently adopted scientific standards, and to the rise of complexity theories. This study evaluates the contributions and major characteristics of the discourses of some of the principal lines of complexity studies, investigating the theoretical sources of complexity approaches, and it presents a synthesis of Ilya Prigogine and Edgar Morin discourses, and the positions of other important authors studying this theme.
