Abstract

This article aims at presenting some information about the life of the English poet John Donne (1572-1631) as well as relating it to his writings. So Donne’s works are presented since his Satyrs, work of his youth, to his Sermons, a result of his artistic maturity, also mentioning his amatory and religious poetry. In the analysis of some of his works, Donne’s most peculiar stylistic resources are highlighted, such as the concept of wit. Eventually, the reception given to Donne’s works – mainly to his poetry – in his afterlife is emphasized, especially during the 20th century.
