Abstract

This article aims to study how Victor Hugo represented the redemption of the prostitute because of love on the play Marion Delorme, wrote in 1829, and how Machado de Assis retakes the subject in his novel Singular Ocorrência, in 1883. This text approaches Brazilian and French writers who could not avoid the subject and created caracters who had a problem with the past and a desire to have a normal and good life in the society of the nineteen century.
