The study of the type – interface between typology and urban morphology and contributions to the understanding of landscape

Abstract

If the concept of urban morphology is not ambiguous – although many people make use of such term when they refer to urban form – we cannot say the same regarding typology, considering that the meanings of the word “type” vary according to the author and the period they belong to. This article deals with definitions and texts on urban morphology and typology, which were produced throughout the time in Brazil and abroad, with the intention of demonstrating how the study of types, in the same way as the study of urban form, can contribute to the apprehension and knowledge of urban landscape.
