Seasonal variability and most probable origin of the beach macro litter in Governor Celso Ramos / SC, Brazil

Abstract

Garbage at sea is a growing and worldwide problem. Governador Celso Ramos is located on the central coast of Santa Catarina and has tourism and fishing as the predominant economic activities. This study tested hypotheses regarding seasonal variability and the most likely origin of marine litter through sampling with spatial and temporal replication. The influence of the season on the density of marine litter was not a significant factor across beaches studied. Items probably associated with fishing activity were more present in winter, while items associated with recreational use of the beach were observed in greater numbers in summer. These results may help the municipality to better direct environmental management and education initiatives aimed at combating waste at sea.

Bruna Costa, IFSC - Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina

 Graduada em Engenheira Ambiental e pós-graduada em Engenharia de Segurança do Trabalho pela Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense - UNESC. No decorrer dos anos, se especializou, buscando novos conhecimentos e experiências. Habilitou-se como Auditora Interna das Normas ISO 14001 e OHSAS 18001, além de ser Perita Ambiental. Realizou cursos na área licenciamentos e fiscalização ambiental. Com experiência na área de Consultoria Ambiental. Atuou em grupos técnicos nas esferas federal, estadual e municipal. Atualmente funcionária publica, de cargo de provimento efetivo, engenheira ambiental da prefeitura municipal de Governador Celso Ramos e cursa mestrado no programa profissional em Clima e Ambiente do Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina - IFSC.

Walter Martin Widmer, Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina – IFSC

Possui graduação em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1993), mestrado em Engenharia Ambiental pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1997) e doutorado em Ciências (PhD) - The University of Sydney (2003). É professor do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Santa Catarina (IFSC). Atuou também como professor adjunto da Universidade Federal do Paraná. É membro do corpo editorial da Revista Caminho Aberto (IFSC). Atuou como revisor de manuscritos para os periódicos Biological Conservation (Elsevier), Biotemas (UFSC), Journal of Environmental Management (Elsevier) e Journal of Integrated Coastal Zone Management, entre outros. Leciona nos cursos técnicos de Meio Ambiente e de Segurança do Trabalho, na graduação em Engenharia Eletrônica e no Mestrado Profissional em Clima e Ambiente, atuando nas áreas de sustentabilidade, gerenciamento costeiro integrado, planejamento experimental, gestão ambiental da navegação recreativa e resíduos sólidos no ambiente marinho.
