Abstract

To promote regional development, it is important to know how business demographic indicators behave in different regions. This study calculates annual indicators of birth, mortality, turnover and survival of companies in the mesoregions of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) from 2006 to 2013. For this, an identified database is used that allows the longitudinal follow-up of all the formal companies. The results show that the differences between mesoregions are small, indicating little influence of spatial localization on business demographics in the short term. The results also show that the highest survival rates of companies are in the Northeast region while the highest birth and turnover rates are in the Southeast region of RS.
