Rehearsing concepts of mimesis: the fragmentation of the mirror of the world

This essay aims to review the concept of mimesis, tracing its development from the Aristotelian tradition to contemporary reformulations. To this end, the theoretical discussions of Luiz Costa Lima (1986, 2006, 2014, 2021) serve as a foundation for understanding mimesis as a process of subject and societal constitution. This process is mediated by the triadic relationship between the real, the fictional, and the imaginary, which shapes the acts of pretending according to Wolfgang Iser’s perspective (1996, 2002). In this sense, literature is approached as a reworking of reality, promoting the transgression of predetermined meanings. Furthermore, a brief analysis of selected excerpts from Boy without a past by Silviano Santiago (2021) illustrates the hybridization of memory, history, and fiction, reinforcing the understanding of mimesis as “creative imitation”— to recall the expression used by Paulo Pinheiro in his translation of Aristotle’s Poetics — rather than a strictu sensu copy of reality, historical data, or biographical facts. Thus, this essay constructs a reading of mimesis not as mere mirroring but as a critical re-creation of the world.
