Abstract

This article explores the theme of vulnerability and its intrinsic connection to the construction of self-image through a detailed analysis of three contemporary poems: “Balanço de mim” [Inventory of Myself] by Waldo Motta, “Fraternal twins” by Thomas Grimes, and “Kaleidoscope” by Don Charles. To this end, I conduct a comparative analysis that focuses on the emotional and social experiences expressed by the lyrical voices, enabling a deeper immersion into the complexities of the human condition. The analyses reveal that “Balanço de mim” encapsulates the profound dissatisfaction of the lyrical self in response to familial expectations, offering a vivid portrait of the internal struggle between the desire for conformity and the quest for authenticity. In contrast, “Fraternal twins” uncovers the effects of social comparisons and external criticisms on the twins’ self-image, highlighting the significance of love and intimacy as sanctuaries in a world that often marginalizes individuality. “Kaleidoscope”, in particular, depicts vulnerability as a mosaic of identities that reflects the painful experiences of rejection and repulsion, arising from both the critical gaze of parents and a self-perception that is distorted and alienating. While these poems are steeped in experiences of pain and exclusion, they also reveal a remarkable potential for resilience and transformation, facilitating the development of a self-image that strives for positivity and authenticity. In this regard, the poems explore vulnerability not only as an essential facet of subjectivity but also as a defining element of the racialized experience of Black men, whose masculinities have long been shaped by narratives of strength and endurance. This study thus not only deepens the discourse on the complexities of human experience but also underscores poetry as a powerful vehicle for expressing and reflecting on vulnerability and the relentless pursuit of recognition. Ultimately, it aims to contribute to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the contemporary human condition.
