Ecological subjectivity and lyrical objectivism in the poems of Arthur Rimbaud

Abstract

Closely linked to the expression of personal feelings since Romanticism, lyricism is established in Arthur Rimbaud based on an expanded subjectivity that is outside of itself. In his poems, it is possible to identify not only that nature escapes the passive condition of contemplation of the lyrical subject, but also that subjectivity acquires an ecological and geocentric dimension, manifesting a “lyrical objectivism”. This study sought to trace stylistic procedures with which Arthur Rimbaud associates lyricism with a feeling of nature, specifically in the poems “Sensation” and “Les reparties de Nina”, in light of Berque (1998), Collot (2011), Giusto (1980), Eigeldinger (1981), Kondratov (1972), among others. The reading of the poems pointed to elements such as verbal conjugation linked to tactility, the link between strophic progression and the stages of subjective-objective fusion, and biophony as an acoustic demarcation of the landscape.
