Considering the narrative strategies presented in the novel Mistérios de Lisboa, published in 1854 by Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco, we propose to analyze how these strategies appeared in the film adaptation of the novel of the same name, released in 2010 and directed by Raúl Ruiz. The goal, therefore, is to reflect on how aspects of the writing appear in the film narrative, demonstrating the specificities of each media and the effects obtained with their uses, especially those regarding imagery choices for the transposition of typical elements of the Portuguese author’s writing, such as the feuilletonistic organization and the use of metalanguage. Thus, we will explore the literary and cinematic texts, keeping in mind their structural and functionaldifferences. We will base our discussions on the studies ofintermediality, metafiction and film adaptationdone by authors such as Irina Rajewski (2005), Claus Clüver (2006) and Linda Hutcheon (2011).
