Images on emptiness: a study on Italo Calvino’s trilogy Our ancestors

This study aims at analyzing Our Ancestors (1960) – Italo Calvino’s trilogy which brings The Cloven Viscount (1951), The Baron in the trees (1957) and the Nonexistent Knight (1959). In the trilogy the image connects to a representation of theatricality, from Calvino’s notion of "visibility". Some pieces of his work open up the possibility of a significant reading of his fiction in the fantastic genre, from the poetics of neo-realism. The scenic-musical spectacle of Grupo Galpão - Partido (1999) – based on the first book of the trilogy- is a strong example of the image dimension in Calvino’s literature, that is repeatedly recreated by theater, among other arts. The notion of artistic image in the exchanging glances game, into dialogue with some features of the post dramatic theatre, points to the subject's unconscious dimension. Along that path, an articulation of Our Ancestors is traced within the psychoanalytic notion of subject, indicated by the concepts of real, symbolic and imaginary.Downloads
