In Marafa, Marques Rebelo concocts the social dynamics in Rio de Janeiro, bringing into light a great character gallery to compose two distinct universes, which do not communicate or intermingle with one another. On the one hand there is the sphere of order and work, in which belong the individuals who follow the bourgeois social patterns, seeking to live in an honest and dignified way, through labor and self-effort; on the other hand, lies the space of disorder and hustling [malandragem], in which are inserted those who reject the work ethics and live through conning, prostitution and everything related to a licentious life. In this context, the ethics of those who live through hustling and idleness prevails, for, in an excluding and competitive society, in which activism is a founding characteristic, in general those who resource to illegal means or marginal artifices to fulfill their goals succeed, whilst those who resign to their inferior condition end up defeated.
