The article presented intends to explain the fundamentals of creative writing proposed by Vogler (2015). The article discusses Vogler’s reinterpretation of Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces, a book in which he discusses the roles of archetypes and their functions in narratives, as well as reorganizing the stages of the hero’s journey with a view to writing scripts. To exemplify the effectiveness and pertinence of Vogler’s ideas, it was first investigated in Caramuru: poema épico do descobrimento da Bahia, by Frei José de Santa Rita Durão (2008 [1781]), the presence and function of such archetypes; and, later, the applicability of the stages of the hero’s journey in a reading of the film Caramuru, a invenção do Brasil (2001).
