The contact with the literary world allows to the reader to build ideas, get to know different points of view and, especially, establish reflections about their own identity and their role in the social environment. The statement is perfectly in line with the short story “The man who knew Javanese”, by Lima Barreto, in which the character Castelo appears, a typical social actor in Brazilian urbanity at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Through his speech, one glimpses his process of transition from individuation to the condition of a person, inserted in the social environment, subject to the general laws of the State. The analysis proposed in this study has as its theoretical horizon a perspective of transition from individual to person in the light of semiolinguistics, anthropology and the country's history.
