The representation of female old age in the oral narratives of Matintaperera

According to Maria de Fátima de Souza Santos (1994), the study of human aging and / or old age within the scope of Human Sciences is recent, especially in Brazil where only in the past few years have scientific works in the areas of Psychology, Sociology, among others begun to emerge. In our investigations in the online Institutional Repositories of renowned Universities we found very few studies in the area of Modern Languages (Literature), especially in the Doctoral Courses, with an approach to this stage of human life, which ends up becoming something extremely worrisome since it prevents us from developing our social function while literature professionals, which is to humanize subjects through literary texts, as proposed by Candido (1972). Thus, taking into account the reduced amount of Theses in the area of Modern Languages, as well as our interest in the topic, we’ve decided to study senescence, especially in women, because in addition to censuses and statistical data demonstrating that there are more elderly women than men, thus causing the phenomenon of feminization or feminilation that is discussed by Menezes (2017) and Salgado (2002), women in old age experience, according to Debert (1994), a situation of double discrimination: that of being a woman and that of being old. However, the results of our research in the collection of “The Imaginary in the Oral Narrative Forms of the Paraense Amazon” (IFNOPAP) revealed a new profile of the old woman, one who is not loaded with prejudices or stereotypes, but of novelty, freedom and curiosity. Thus, the general objective of this research is to understand how the female old age is represented in the oral narratives of Matinta Perera. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Beauvoir (2018), Goldenberg (2017), Debert (1994) and Zimerman (2007).
