This paper is the preliminary study of an archive finding: H. J. Koellreutter’s musicalization project of Mário de Andrade’s Macunaíma. The project, dated March 2000, describes the process for composing Mário de Andrade’s rhapsody, directed and composed by the conductor H. J. Koellreutter. The finding confirms H. J. Koellreutter’s interest on dialoguing with Mário de Andrade’s work, which would suspend the reductionist opposition between atonality and musical nationalism, revealing, in the end, H. J. Koellreutter seemed more able to understand certain aspects of Mário de Andrade’s musical nationalism than orthodox nationalists were.
