The poetry and its translation, according to the first German romantic
Abstract
A versão do poema épico indiano Bhagavad-Gita do sânscrito para o latim, realizada por August von Schlegel, gerou controvérsia no início do século XIX, nos anos que se seguiram a 1823, quando foi publicada. O trabalho foi criticado pelo sanscritólogo francês S. A. Langlois e criteriosamente estudado por Wilhelm von Humboldt, que não lhe poupou elogios. O filósofo Georg W. F. Hegel baseou-se, por sua vez, no estudo de Humboldt, principalmente para questionar a afirmação de Humboldt e de Schlegel, de que o texto traduzido seria a única poesia antiga com autêntico conteúdo filosófico, e também para fazer algumas observações tradutológicas. Essa polêmica erudita foi enriquecida posteriormente com as opiniões de autores ingleses como H. Th. Colebrooke, também especialista em sânscrito, e Charles Wilkins, que fizera a primeira tradução da Bhagavad-Gita para a língua inglesa, em 1784. Esse debate inspiraria então as reflexões de August von Schlegel sobre tradução, que ele escreveu em 1826, ou seja, 3 anos após a sua primeira tradução da Bhagavad-Gita. Em 1846, um ano após sua morte, é publicada uma segunda versão que ele havia feito desse mesmo poema.Downloads
