Abstract

This article discusses the female body's publicity in The Handmaid’s Tale discourse. The discussion is developed from Arendt and Aboim's considerations, which deals with the public / private dichotomy directly in relation to the gender perspective. The distinction between these spaces relates to the exercise of individual freedoms, which in principle doesn't find limitations on the private plan but come redefined the dictatorial and dystopian society represented. The question is highlighted when you go into question gender relations, the role and the spaces of women in society. So, discussing about the public and private spaces in relation to gender delimitation, corresponds to the intention of reflecting about the space that each gender has access and how that access is socially regulated. The film discusses the relationship between these spaces from the body area of loss.
