Abstract
The Xucuru, an indigenous group of Pernambuco, is one of seven tribes remaing in the State. The Toré is theis principal mystic ritual and it represents the revitalization of old customsn. The ritual drink, called jurema, is made by scraping the bark of Mimosa tenuiflora (Wild.) Poir. While in Tore ritual's the Xucuru use vestment, ornaments, muscal instrument and jurema drink. This drink is characteristic of many indigenous groups from northeastern Brazil. The Xucuru people belive that this drink permits the integration among the Xucuru and their dead spirits. Other species are used in different ways: fifteen (75% of registered totality) in mediumistic bathing (contact/cleanness against bad spirits), one in amulet (cashew nut, to avoid snake bite), three in smoking (to repel bad spirits), two for cigars, despite the habit of Xucuru, the custom species used in general is from the market and is named "fumo brabo". The families observed in this study were Anacardiaceae (one species), Arecaceae (one species), Aspleniaceae (one species), Bignoniaceae (one species), Euphorbiaceae (two species), Labiatae (six species), Leguminosae (two species), Meliaceae (one species), Musaceae (one species), Poaceae (one species), Polypodiaceae (one species), Rutaceae (one species), Verbenaceae (one species). That used species for the mystics rituals are native and introduced and show the diversity and cultural importance of use of plants to this tribe.Downloads
