Abstract
Roeboides dispar, a new species, is described from the ipper Madeira, Juruá and Ucayali rivers of the upper portion of the Amazon River drainage. The new species is distinguished from all other species of the genus by the presence of four teeth forming a regular external row in the premaxilla (three, rarely four teeth not arranged in a regular external row in other species), and 31 to 48 maxillary conical teeth (19 or frwer in other species). The peculiar distribution of R. dispar and its basal position in the phylogeny of the genus suggest an initial vicariant event separating the upper portion of Madeira, Juruá and Ucayali rivers from the rest of the Amazon drainage.Downloads
