Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) diet from Northern Espírito Santo State coast, Brazil

Abstract

The franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) is the most threatened dolphin species in the Brazilian coast. The study area is the northernmost distribution range of the species and the stock inhabiting the northern State of Espírito Santo is isolated from other populations. Likewise, there is no information on feeding habits of franciscana dolphins in the study area. Hence, the aim of this study was to describe the diet of franciscana dolphins from the Northern Espírito Santo State coast. Stomach contents of 18 individuals stranded in the study area between January 2012 and March 2015 were analyzed. We ranked each specific prey item found in stomach contents using the frequency of occurrence, the total count of prey items, and the relative abundance of prey. It was found novel records of prey species for the franciscana dolphin and we explored possible feeding strategy patterns. The fish Isopisthus parvipinnis was the most common prey consumed by the dolphins. Our report agrees with previous studies showing demersal fish species, mainly sciaenids, as the most common preys consumed by the franciscana dolphin followed by pelagic fish species.

Gabriel Rupil, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

Graduação em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Nacional de Córdoba - Argentina. Mestrado em Biodiversidade Tropical pelo CEUNES - UFES (São Mateus, ES). Tem experiência na área de Ecologia Marinha, Biologia Pesqueira e Oceanografia. Linha de pesquisa voltada para o estudo da ecologia trófica de mamíferos marinhos e a sua interação com a pesca. Experiência em necrópsias, resgate de fauna e análise de conteúdos estomacais de cetáceos. Identificação de presas de espécies ictiófagas. Ictiologia. Principal interesse é o estudo de redes tróficas marinhas, a investigação sobre a função ecossistêmica dos mamíferos marinhos, os impactos da pesca e a modelagem ecológica. Atualmente sou doutorando no Programa de Pós-graduação em Ecologia da UFSC (Florianópolis-SC).

Lupércio Barbosa, Organização Consciência Ambiental - Instituto ORCA

Graduação em Medicina pela Escola Superior de Ciências da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Vitória. Trabalhou com atividades de monitoramento e conservação de aves marinhas e seus ambientes insulares de reprodução. Colaborou na implantação e manejo de viveiro de mudas de restinga, objetivando a recuperação de áreas degradadas. Também foi Diretor do Departamento de Meio Ambiente da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Vila Velha e membro fundador e atual Diretor Executivo da Organização Consciência Ambiental Instituto ORCA. É o pioneiro no desenvolvimento de atividades de monitoramento de encalhes de mamíferos marinhos no Espírito Santo.

Milton César Marcondes, Instituto Baleia Jubarte

Médico Veterinário formado pela Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia USP. Trabalhou com controle de zoonoses e com animais silvestres. Atualmente ocupa o cargo de Coordenador de Pesquisa no Instituto Baleia Jubarte. Principais áreas de atuação junto aos mamíferos aquáticos incluem: resgate de animais encalhados, clínica médica e patologia.

Barbara Maichak de Carvalho, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Graduação em Oceanografia pela Universidade Federal do Paraná e mestrado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sistemas Costeiros e Oceânicos pela Universidade Federal do Paraná. Atualmente é doutoranda no Programa de Pós-Graduação de Zoologia da UFPR. Tem experiência na área de Oceanografia Biológica, com ênfase em Ictiologia. Atuando principalmente em estudos de morfologia e morfometria (linear e geométrica) de otólitos e em estudos de ecologia trófica de ictiofágos.

 

Ana Paula Farro, Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo

Graduação em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP, mestrado e doutorado em Ciências Biológicas (Genética) pela mesma Universidade. Pós-doutorado na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). Professora Adjunto na UFES desde 2009. Parte do corpo docente permanente do Programa de Pós-graduação em Biodiversidade Tropical (PPGBT) e docente colaborador dos Programas de Oceanografia Ambiental (PPGOAM) e Biologia Animal (PPGBAN) dessa Instituição. Possui experiência na área de Genética Molecular Animal, enfocando estudos populacionais e conservação de mamíferos.
