Abstract
In order to evaluate changes in leaf size and morphology during the process of growth from young plants of the lower canopy to adult trees, leaflets of Tapirira guianensis were analysed. The plant material was collected at Volta Velha Reserve, Itapoá Country, a native tropical forest, located on the coastal plain of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The results indicate that adult trees present reduction in size and spongy mesophyll, increase in stomata density, total leaf and cuticle thickness and addition of a new layer of palisade mesophyll. These modifications are probably related to environmental factors, such as light, temperature and humidity.Downloads
