Abstract
An analysis of a fixed motion pattern used in certain activities, such as feeding, transport of the substrate and care of the offspring, was undertaken in six species of cichlids from the endemic South American genus Gymnogeophagus. The fishes were collected in many localities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and the observations were made under laboratory conditions. The locomotion pattern described, called "caiaque", is similar to a frequently exhibited swimming pattern in cichlids, where the pectoral find flap alternately.Downloads
