Abstract
The effects of floral bud secretion (FBS) and nectar (FN) of Spathodea campanulata Beauvois (Bignoniaceae) on the longevity of Apis mellifera (Hym.: Apidae) a Africanized workers bees were tested. The bees were maintained under confinement and in the absence of a queen, in standardized wood boxes, with water and food, with the addition of floral secretions FBS and FN for two distinct test groups. The number of dead bees and the alimentary consumption were evaluated daily. Both of the analyzed substances caused mortality among the tested bees, compared to the control groups of bees. FBS and FN toxicity by ingestion was confirmed. No significant statistical differences between the effects of FBS and FN were observed.
