Abstract
Mar Grosso beach is located in the urban area of Laguna city, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. During the period of January 6 to 14, 02001, qualitative research was carried out on the lacal avifauna. The urban area and the beach environments were explored in a total of 32 hours of field the study. Twenty – six bird species were observed, seven of which were essentially aquatic: Spheniscus magellanicus Fregata magnificens, Phalacrocorax brasilianus, Egretta thula, Vanellus chilensis, Larus dominicanus and Ceryle torquata. Noteworthy was the presence of Spheniscus magellanicus, which was not mentioned by Schielfler and Soares in their study of 1994. Larus dominicanus and Coragyps atratus were often observed, eating fish viscera and food leftovers. This research gives a brief diagnosis of the avifauna in the area and can be used as an aid for other research.
