Surface structures of Neisseria gonorrhoeae which are related to virulence are the pilin, the outer membrane proteins (PI, PII, PIII) and the lipooligasaccharide (LOS). These structures have different roles in the pathogenic process. Pilin presents antiphagocytic activity. PII interacts with the surface mucous and LOS mediates the major toxic damage to the host cell. Serological classification of N. gonorrhoeae is based on PI protein and allows classification of gonococci in groups WI, WII, WIII and types 1 a 9. Serotypes 1-3, 4-8, and 9 belong to WI, WII and WIII groups, respectively.Downloads
