Abstract

This work analyzes the productivity of the manufacturing sector in Brazil and Argentina during the period between 2004 and 2015. For this purpose, the growth of the labor productivity variable was made with the shift-share method. This method is widely used in works that seek to decompose the growth of a certain variable, in the present study the decomposition allowed to observe the nature of labor productivity growth segmented into global, structural effect of each sector or specific effect of the country. The results indicate that for Brazil, productivity doubled between 2004 and 2015 and the local effects of the country were important for such growth. In the case of Argentina, there was no sustainable productivity growth in the analyzed period, questioning the process of "re-industrialization". The growth of labor productivity in Argentina was based on the global and sectorial effect.
