Habitus, ethos, and militarization processes of uniformed police in Brazil and Chile: a comparison of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo (PMESP) and the Carabineros of Chile

his article analyzes militarism in police forces through a comparative study between the Military Police of the State of São Paulo (PMESP) and the Carabineros of Chile, seeking to understand its ontological meaning from an institutionalist perspective. In this context, more than a historical legacy, militarism is understood as a constitutive element of the institutional identity of these corporations, expressed by a distinct police-military habitus and ethos, different from those of the Armed Forces. Based on Bourdieu's theories of power fields, Broudeur's police ethos, and Powell and DiMaggio's organizational fields, the study demonstrates that militarization constitutes an autonomous field, governed by values, norms, and practices that sustain its internal logic and explain the resistance to demilitarization. The comparative analysis shows that PMESP and Carabineros maintain military aesthetics and character as symbolic and operational foundations of their actions, reaffirming them even in a democratic context. For militarized police forces, militarism is not an authoritarian vestige, but their very reason for being, constituting a specific field of power and police identity.
