Abstract

The article proposes that the Brazilian economic thinking should be understood through its historical and institutional aspects. The debate on economic development in Brazil is connected to economics constitution as academic field and its professionalization, and to the specific way capitalism has developed in this country. This paper seeks to recover critically a line of investigation developed in the 90’s on the role of economists as political actors and discusses the centrality of economic institutions as democracy stabilizers mainly in Latin American countries. Thereafter, it considers the pro and antiausterity knowledge regimes constitution in Brazil.
