Aportes para una discusión sobre las sociedades esclavistas mediterráneas antiguas

Resumo

Este artigo apresenta algumas das discussões historiográficas que ocorreram nos últimos cinquenta anos nos estudos sobre a escravidão no mundo mediterrâneo clássico. Analisa algumas das recentes elaborações de Fabio Duarte Joly e José Moura Knust em sua crítica à ideia de “sociedade escravista” em oposição à de “sociedade com escravos” sistematizada por Moses Finley, bem como alguns dos tratamentos subsequentes do conceito por outros historiadores. Também são apresentadas algumas considerações sobre a ideia de “sistemas escravistas”, particularmente em relação à análise do papel da circulação mercantil nos processos de escravização. Também são desenvolvidos alguns detalhes sobre a comparação entre a escravidão no mundo mediterrâneo antigo e a que ocorreu no mundo atlântico moderno, com ênfase especial no tratamento das sociedades escravistas coloniais americanas.
