Oral health guidance for children assisted by OCISP Oficina Esperanza: an experience report

Abstract

Since December 2022, the Dentistry course at the State University of Piauí has ​​been carrying out the Esperanza Odonto UESPI Extension Project in partnership with Oficina Esperanza, a non-profit Public Interest Civil Society Organization that works with art and culture for children in situations of social vulnerability in Parnaíba, Piauí. The project aims to serve these children through actions focused on oral health. As an approach to disseminating information, playful activities and guidance on nutrition are conducted, highlighting foods that can contribute to the development of caries, guidance on oral hygiene, distribution of oral hygiene kits, supervised brushing, discussion groups with the children's caregivers, and referral of specific demands to the School Clinic when necessary. The project enables the integration of academics with society, understanding the different realities of the target population and assisting in the promotion of health and prevention of oral diseases.
