History

Extensio was the first electronic journal to publish articles focused on university extension. Its project was developed between October 2003 and September 2004, encompassing stages such as: initial reflections and analysis of electronic scientific publishing platforms; definition of the journal’s name, periodicity, visual identity, and website structure; development of author guidelines and formatting standards; creation of the homepage and inaugural issue; and overall evaluation and refinement of the journal.

The name Extensio, derived from Latin, means “the act of extending and disseminating,” reflecting the journal’s objectives: to deepen discussions on extension, stimulate the production of texts based on extension experiences, and recognize innovative initiatives that promote social development.

Thus, the journal aims not only to disseminate internal experiences from UFSC, but also to host contributions from other institutions.

From its inception, Extensio has sought to innovate by following technological transformations in society. An example was the inclusion of multimedia elements, such as music on its homepage, adding a dynamic and modern aspect to the presentation of extension activities.

The first issue was launched on May 7, 2004, at www.extensio.ufsc.br, under the leadership of the Vice-Rector for Culture and Extension, Denise Guerreiro Vieira da Silva, and edited by Prof. Gilson Braviano. For this inaugural issue, 23 works were selected from the 50 most representative articles of the UFSC Extension Scholarship Program (2002).

In September 2008, Extensio was incorporated into the UFSC Journal Portal, initiating its transition to the Electronic Journal Publishing System (SEER). From July 2009 onwards, the journal began adapting to national and international standards in order to improve its Qualis classification and enhance communication with authors and readers.

The adoption of Open Journal Systems (OJS) facilitated editorial management, allowing real-time updates by the editor. Since then, the journal has operated exclusively on this platform, ensuring a more professional control of the editorial workflow.

In 2026, Extensio adopted the continuous publication model, in which articles are published individually as soon as they complete the editorial process, with the volume remaining open from the publication of the first article.
