Abstract

An environmental analysis of São Pedro de Alcântara gave special attention to the categories of place and landscape. A historical review of the early years of settlement and a survey of activities now undertaken found a relationship of people with nature that make the municipality a peaceful place with characteristics that recall rural environments of times past. This tranquility is broken by natural events such as floods caused by strong rains at the headwaters of the Maruim River. The recent installation of the state penitentiary complex has caused impacts on the natural environment and may also cause new disruptions in the way of life of all the inhabitants.
