Abstract

Life conditions of an important part of the Brazilian population have shown a situation of inequality which has usually been interpreted in the light of concepts of poverty and segregation. This text repots a process of social inequality based on the level of impoverishment in residential areas which belong to the port administration in Rio Grande, RS. Based on data collected by the 2000 Census, field activities and preliminary data released by the 2010 Census, this study analyzed the social dynamics in those areas in a period in which state and private investments have been made and when conditions to construct pacts may be constructed to mitigate some of the previously identified problems.
