Abstract

Alexander Von Humboldt proposed a scheme to stratify the vegetation using criteria of altitude and latitude in South America. These criteria were adopted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) to classify the Brazilian vegetation. A map with this stratification for the Brazilian territory is presented in this study. The implications of this map for this classification for identifying the high altitude fields is discussed, regarding their protection by the Federal Law nº 11.428, of 2006 – The Atlantic Forest Law. For this purpose, the montain and high mountain environments in Brazil are analyzed with regard to their relief classification and their role as ecological refuges.
