On the Funeral of a Ghanaian Priestess: Shango and the Brazilian identity

Faced with the intensification of various forms of repression in the first half of the nineteenth century, directed primarily against freed Africans, hundreds of former slaves decided to ‘return’ to Africa, most of them choosing to settle in the present-day countries of Nigeria, Benin and to a lesser extent Ghana. Based on the events surrounding the funeral of an important priestess of the descendants of the former slaves who had settled in Accra – Ghana’s capital city – this article analyses the ways in which these Tabom became integrated into local society, as well as the identity strategies adopted in this group.
