Em nome do amor: indivíduo, projeto e memória coletiva na visão de jovens judeus cariocas

Abstract

The article deals with the construction of jewish identity by a group of Young middle-class carioca jews, emphasizing their sociability and endogamic marriage. The fear of assimilation through ‘mixed marriages’ contributes to the formation of youth groups whose desire is to offer events which, despite the fact that don’t use, explicitly, jewish symbols, reinforce bonds of friendship and encourage ethnic ‘purity’ through endogamy. The aim is to show how this young people, who are very much integrated into brazilian society, take into account the dialog between Tradition (represented by endogamy) and Modernity (represented by the freedom of the choice of the partner), that is, how their friendship and affective relations helps in constructing this particular jewish identity.
