Problematizing Performance

This is a short critical revision by Edward Schieffelin – author of the ethnography The Sorrow of the Lonely and the Burning of the Dancers (1976) – on the conexions between the performance perspective and social sciences theories. The author’s argument concentrates on the problems of the assumption of a single performer/audience relation in the Western way, something that undermines the diversity of interactional forms which, in turn, constructs equally diverse relations between “enactment” and reality.
