Abstract

This article focuses on the history, based on psychiatry, of the diagnosis of panic disorder and its consolidation in the following decades in the scientific literature. Following a historical and cultural movement in psychiatry from the 1960s to 1980s of strong criticism of psychodynamic psychotherapy, panic emerges as a disorder for the first time after the clinical trial of a drug called Imipramine, in the late 1950s. From the first tests in which the psychiatrist Donald Klein carried out his tests on institutionalized patients, to the later experiments using placebo, I demonstrate how a transformation in the theoretical horizon of North American psychiatry (from psychoanalysis to biological psychiatry) was inscribed in these experiments. I argue that, in addition to a theoretical rejection of psychoanalysis as an explanatory factor, there was a rejection of format, which ends up being officially instituted in the third Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III).
