The fluidity of pharmacological cognitive enhancement and the co-production of subjectivity modes in contemporary times: anthropological research from nootropics

In an ethnographic incursion on the internet, following the clues of the scientific and commercial dissemination of nootropic substances on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), the status of such substances is discussed – which comprise a wide range of products that escape from official health regulation – as well as the pharmacological cognitive enhancement’ resignification that they promote. Considered safe and free from side effects by their supporters, such substances are indicated and sold to enhance cognitive enhancement and maximize human productivity. An optimized human is forged. The interaction between the lay public, interested in the advertised nootropic substances and their supposed effects, and the specialists who recommend them gives rise to new biosocialities, enshrining the biomedical technologies’ capitalist logic and their political and socioeconomic effects in contexts of fierce professional and academic competition.
