As posic?o?es religiosas em relac?a?o a? economia moral ha? muito tempo te?m fornecido recursos importantes para a reflexa?o cri?tica sobre a vida econo?mica. Quando as instituic?o?es religiosas procuram construir alternativas aos sistemas econo?micos e a?s pra?ticas financeiras existentes, no entanto, elas tambe?m encontram uma se?rie de problemas. Em contraste com muitas cri?ticas seculares a? economia, as cri?ticas religiosas tendem a ser expli?citas sobre as suas diretrizes morais e os pressupostos ontolo?gicos em que se baseiam, dando origem a ha?bitos econo?micos e instituic?o?es financeiras distintas. Por isso, o seu estudo etnogra?fico ilumina uma se?rie de questo?es antropolo?gicas mais gerais sobre as fontes do valor, os limites do ca?lculo racional, a moralidade da di?vida, o significado da desigualdade, a justic?a econo?mica e os objetivos legi?timos de uma economia.
